Welcome 2022 The Threshold of the New Year

British Library digitised image from page 384 of "Man, embracing his origin, ... civilization, ... mental and moral faculties. ... Illustrated"

Today, this first day of another new year, we are crossing into the third year of a pandemic with all its uncertainties, fears, and concerns. And yet again, perhaps with some caution, we still celebrate and welcome this new opportunity to reinvent ourselves or improve our lives. It’s the first of the month and the first of the year, and I said “Rabbit, rabbit, ” invoking the British custom to ensure good luck.

I’ve always been interested, charmed, bemused, and obsessed with the Celtic idea of “betwixt and between,” that liminal place we can barely touch. These are places we glimpse fleetingly: where the wave meets the shore; where the darkness meets the light; where old meets the new; where the night meets the dawn; and so forth. It’s like seeing the Fair Folk, you see them out of the corner of your eye, a gossamer glimpse, and magical encounter of some magic just within or out of reach. I think that’s why when the calendar changes, when the Wheel of the Year turns, when the Moon moves her phases, we seek special customs and observances to commemorate those times. It’s a new opportunity to become new, to reinvent, and to rest from the hurly burly of everyday life.

This January 1, we welcome the Roman God of doorways and thresholds, Janus. This two faced god can see past, present, and future. He was the god of beginnings, endings, and thresholds. He was often shown holding a scepter and a key. He was in charge of the orderly movements of to and fro, going from here and there, going from one idea to another idea, and going from one pathway to a new one. The key implies that he can unlock doorways and reveal what is hidden behind. Movement and revelation. He was also considered the arbiter of peace and war.

Janus was invoked to preside over crossings, over borders, and new beginnings; and at the beginning of a year, a month, or at the dawn of a new day. He was included in celebrations of harvest, of births, and of weddings. He was honored with new wine, frankincense and with newly ground meal and with salt.

Ten years ago, I wrote a charge of the God Janus. Some ways we can celebrate the crossing of borders.

The Charge of Janus

Hear now the charge of the God, Janus

I, who am the god of beginnings and thresholds,

I, who sees the past, present and future as one,

Do charge and exhort you, my children,

To walk boldly along the edges of life, love, and magick,

To explore the boundaries of your life and beyond.

Be strong and be brave as you dance the boundaries

Of betwixt and between

For it is there you will find the mysteries hidden from you now.

Dance and whirl to the music that sings from your soul

And love every moment of the wonder.

Move across the threshold and greet newness with open arms.

Dare to be yourself and dare to be greater than you are now.

Find the stillpoint of your soul and sing from that place

Of joy, laughter, sorrow, and tears.

Know your dreams and live them.

Tell your stories to all who will listen,

And even to those who will not

For these are the stories of the gods.

As you sing the songs of your life

See your yesterdays as opportunities of wonder.

As you sing the songs of your life

See your tomorrows as times of hope

And as you sing your song of today

Know the joy of living each moment.

For you hold the key

And you are the key

To wonder, hope, joy, magic, and illumination.

Blessed be.

The Horned God, a Teacher for Winter

The Horned God is the evocative name a 20th century melding of several ancient images of gods such as Cernunos, Herne the Hunter, Pan, Dionysus, Janus, and Green Man.  Not much exists in writing and the oral tradition has been lost, so modern pagans worship the male energy force of winter as the Horned God.  He is the Great Father, the Lord of Winter with sovereignty of the male aspect of creation and fertility.  He has the power of creation and destruction.  He harvests the land of dead animals and cares for the land in the cold dark of winter. While the Horned God may be a modern derivation of ancient images, the ancient and powerful life (and death) force her represents remains present in our world and in our lives.

The Charge of the Horned God

Hear now the charge of the Horned God,

I who am called Lord of the Wild Hunt, Herne, Cernunnos, Pan, Janus and many other names.

Know that I am here and present in the winter of your lives,

Guiding, harvesting, and knowing you soul.

Be strong of heart and body in the cold and dark

And you will be stronger still in the light and warmth.

Be in tune with the turning of the Wheel

And live each season according to its turning.

Tune your life to the rhythms of the world

And you will know my creation, my destruction

And my love.

My touch may be cold, but it will warm you soul

With connection, power, and strength.

Be compassionate with those who are weaker

And be understanding of those you do not comprehend.

Know the mystery of contradiction

And live in the rhythm and melding of opposing forces.

Live the short days and rest peaceful in the long nights.

Be one with me and know peace.

Blessed be

The Goddess, With Chocolate: The Spirituality of Chocolate

I could write a lot about chocolate, as I’m sure many of us can. Chocolate comforts us, heals us, and makes us feel good. It’s a delight to the senses with a pungent earthy smell and a delicious flavor. It combines well with other substances and flavors to bring us to a state of sensation and satiation.

Botanically, chocolate means “food of the gods,” and it held a sacred place in the customs and rituals of native peoples of Central America. Our modern culture has worshipped chocolate, shaping it to our own beliefs. Women have a special affinity for chocolate and we know the Goddess infuses Herself into it.

Brieflly, and I’m sure there will be more later, the spirituality of chocolate is complex and powerful. Here is part of my vision of it, though I’m sure more is to be revealed:

  • White chocolate corresponds to the Maiden
  • Milk chocolate corresponds to the Mother
  • Dark chocolate corresponds to the Crone

And before you think I’m employing M-M-C fundamentalism talked about in another post,

  • Cocoa Powder corresponds to the Hag (more on Her later)
  • Chocolate with nuts corresponds to the God

I am actively pursuing additional wisdom on the spirituality of chocolate. It’s a sacrifice, something I do in service to All-That-Is. And I’m very glad the Universe has a good sense of humor as well as the good taste to bless us with this wonderful substance.

Happy Valentine’s Day and may your day be filled with love and kisses, chocolate or otherwise.

The Wild God: A Worth Consort for the Rowdy Goddess

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted. It’s been busy. The coolest thing. My new book came out in June from Spilled Candy. The Wild God is off and running. I got an unexpected bouquet when Murv Sellars recommended the book as a “must have” to someone inquiring about a book on men and the craft. [2013 note, the book is currently out of print]
This was a wonderful book to write and hard to get published. Books on men in the Craft don’t sell, according to the publishers. At least don’t sell fast enough or hard enough for the big publishers to invest in it. It takes small publishers committed to serving the community. Such is Lorna Tedder and her staff at Spilled Candy. Many thanks to them.
If you are woman and you wish to find a God who loves you and serves you, He’s here. If you are a man and you wish to find a positive, authentic way to look at the sacred masculine. He’s here.
It’s a wild ride and time for the Wild God and the Rowdy Goddess to play.
May your journey bring you joy!
